Tiger logo

The upbeat little ditty when you install OS X Panther (10.3), is “Eple” by Royksopp

For Tiger, aka 10.4 the stylesmiths at Apple decided to go with “Bytecry” by Weevil.

Rumor has it that Leopard, OS X 10.5, will “Exodus Honey” by Honeycut, but with a new movie as well.

In 10.4.X you can extract both the movie and the sound by going to Macintosh HD/System/Library/Core Services, then control+click on Setup Assistant, click Show package Contents, click Contents/Resources/ conrol+click TransitionSection.bundle, Show Package Contents, click Contents/Resources, and the movie (intro.mov) and audio (intro-sound.mp3) are located there.

Macintosh Antivirus - 2005

20-Jul-05

Update: Virex 7.7 is available. Go here to download it.

In light of the upcoming school year, we’re posting the antivirus software for Macintosh users. Until McAfee releases a new version of Virex for OS X, here is what’s needed, listed by operating system version:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or greater: Virex 7.2. Click on the link to download.
  • Mac OS X 10.1.5 to 10.3.9: Virex 7.6. CLick on the link to download.

Virex 7.6 is the latest version, however it is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.4 (and all sub-version of 10.4). As a result, you should not load it, instead use the older version, Virex 7.2.

Notes on Mac OS X 10.4

15-Jun-05

With the release of Apple’s Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), there are some software incompatibilities to note. First, SPSS 11 is not compatible. It will not launch. We are talking with SPSS about the availability of a patch.

Second, McAfee’s Virex 7.6 is also incompatible. The background scans of your computer never stop running and take up *way* too much of the processor’s resources. This is especially hard on laptops as this causes your battery to drain extremely fast. Unlike in the case of SPSS, the older release of Virex does work. You can download Virex 7.2 here.

  6. Choose Images > Burn or click Burn in the tool bar.
  7. Insert a blank CD in the optical drive.
  8. Select the “Leave disc appendable” checkbox. If you don’t see this option, click the triangle in the top-right corner to see this option.

GradeKeeper

17-Aug-04

Gradebook software now available for download for Mac and PC:

http://www.gradekeeper.com/download.htm

  • SU License Name is: Southwestern University
  • SU License Code is: 502729

IMPORTANT:

Gradebook for the Macintosh Operating System does not add a file extension to saved files’ names. If you use Gradebok on a Mac, you should add a .grk extension to a saved file. That way you will be able to open your file on a Windows PC. If you are having problems opening Gradebook files from one Mac to another, try dropping your Gradebook file on the Gradekeeper PC->Mac utility.

Gradekeeper 5.89 Mac folder contents

This utility adds back the file resource data that identifies Gradekeeper files. Why would you have to do this? When a file is transferred across file servers or networks, the resource data that identifies a file can be lost. This is usually prevented by addingg an extension to a filename. In Gradekeeper’s case, this does not seem to work, so this utility is there.

Mozilla Web Browser

21-Jul-04

Mozilla 1.7 is the latest release of the browser suite for Mac OS X.

To install Mozilla by downloading the Mozilla disk image, follow these steps:
Click this mozilla-mac-MachO.dmg.tgz link to download it to your machine. By default, the file is downloaded to your desktop.
Once you have downloaded the .dmg.gz file, drag it onto Stuffit Expander to decompress it (Stuffit Expander may launch and decompress the file automatically). If the disk image doesn’t mount automatically, double-click on the .dmg file to mount it. If that fails, and the file does not look like a disk image file, do a “Show Info” on the file, and, in the “Open with application” category, choose Disk Copy. In Mac OS 10.2, you can use “Open with” from the context menu.
Once the disk image mounts, open it, and drag the Mozilla icon onto your desktop.
We recommend that you drag it into the Applications folder.
Now eject the disk image.
If you like, you can drag Mozilla to your dock to have it easily accessible at all times. You might also wish to select Mozilla as your default browser in the Internet system preferences pane (under the Web tab).

Mac OS X virus?

08-Apr-04

Intego has posted a security alert warning Mac OS X users that a new trojan horse virus appears to be able to execute on a Mac.

This Trojan horse, MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), exploits a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files.

The Trojan horse’s code is encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 (digital music) file. This code is in reality a hidden application that can run on any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X.

Mac OS X displays the icon of the MP3 file, with an .mp3 extension, rather than showing the file as an application, leading users to believe that they can double-click the file to listen to it. But double clicking the file launches the hidden code, which can damage or delete files on computers running Mac OS X, then iTunes to play the music contained in the file, to make users think that it is really an MP3 file . While the first versions of this Trojan horse that Intego has isolated are benign, this technique opens the door to more serious risks.

This Trojan horse has the potential to do any of the following:

  • Delete all of a user’s personal files
  • Send an e-mail message containing a copy of itself to other users
  • Infect other MP3, JPEG, GIF or QuickTime files

Due to the use of this technique, users can no longer safely double-click MP3 files in Mac OS X. This same technique could be used with JPEG and GIF files, though no such cases of infected graphic files have yet been seen.

There will be more information forthcoming about this as the basic structure of the OS X operating system will make it difficult for this virus to infect the core operating system.

No information is available from McAfee at this time. Until further information says otherwise, do not double-click a .mp3 file to launch it. Drag the file into your iTunes library window to play it.

Netscape 7 for Mac OS X & OS 9

16-Feb-04

Netscape 7.1 is the latest version of the venerable web browser. You can download the browser at this link. (OS 9 users, use this link to download Netscape 7.02.)

Once the file downloads, you can double-click the icon to have Stuffit Expander decompress it. Expander will also open the resulting Netscape-MachO.dmg disk image which will prompt you to agree to the license agreement. Click the Agree button, let the disk image mount, then drag the Netscape application’s icon out of the disk image to your hard drive. It is recommended that you place the application in the Applications folder.

*Note: Your web browser will most likely download the file, decompress it and open the resulting disk image for you, leaving the only step the one where you drag the application to your hard drive.
